PE & Sports Funding

Each year, schools receive an allocation of PE and sport premium funding based on the number of pupils in years 1 to 6. Each primary school (with over 16 pupils) receives £16000 in addition to £10 per pupil. The funding is used by schools to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of PE and sport offered.

We determine how best to use this funding to improve the quality and breadth of PE and sport provision, including increasing participation in PE and sport so that pupils develop healthy lifestyles and reach the performance levels they are capable of.

There are 5 key indicators that schools should expect to see improvement across:

  1. The engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity - the Chief Medical Officer guidelines recommend that all children and young people aged 5 to 18 engage in at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day, of which 30 minutes should be in school
  2. The profile of PE and sport is raised across the school as a tool for whole-school improvement
  3. Increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport
  4. Broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils
  5. Increased participation in competitive sport

During 2022 - 2023 our funding was allocated as follows:

Key indicator 1 - All children engaged in physical activity

  • Additional lunchtime staff employed to promote inclusive active play during break times
  • Provision of sports equipment including the addition of a trim trail to encourage more active play

Key indicator 2 - The profile of PE, sports and physical activity supports whole school improvement

  • Promote active learning within the curriculum including learning outdoors, wake up - shake up, movement breaks,  and active maths and english lessons

Key indicator 3 - Increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport

  • Employ specialist sports coaches to work alongside teacher to ensure high quality provision in PE sports lessons..

Key indicator 4 - Broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils

  • Broaden the range of sports offered to all children as after school provision

Key indicator 5 - Increased participation in competitive sport

  • Employing specialist swimming teachers and training staff  to provide additional provision over and above the national curriculum requirement so that all children from Year 2 upwards learn to swim and all children are able to swim at least 25m and the vast majority can swim at least100 metres by the end of Year 6.
  • Provision of sports equipment including the addition of a trim trail to encourage more active play
  • Supplementing the provision of a sports based after school wrap  / club so that more children have access to sports activities after school.

The Impact

  • All children undertook at least 30 minutes physical activity a day in school including more active playtimes through use of additional equipment in our trim trail and improved access climbing equipment.
  • The profile of PESSPA has been raised across the school supporting academic outcomes in line with or above the national average in all areas at the end of KS1 and KS2.
